Matt Hitt walked exclusively for Saint Laurent last week. The occasion, Hedi Slimane’s second menswear collection for his new employers, was never going to receive anything but careful attention. The designer’s tenure at Saint Laurent has divided opinion, but has not been found wanting of an audience. About Slimane’s latest collection, Style.com’s Tim Blanks asked readers to imagine it as “the most expensive fan letter in history,” that is, to rock & roll.
To that end, Matt Hitt, a guitarist for his band The Drowners, and various angular rockers, models, and the like were cast for the runway show. Days later Matt and a capacity crowd celebrated the Slimnane’s 5 July birthday under a vaulted-ceilinged in an intimate Parisian club. The evening was assiduously chronicled through a series of rich black and white stills by the designer himself and featured in his own Hedi Slimane Diary.
Matt is pictured wearing his signature leather jacket and knit cap, strumming a six-string Fender, and otherwise reveling in the occasion of the designer’s 45th birthday. However raucous the occasion may appear, there is no question about Slimane’s adroit messaging. The designer’s term at Saint Laurent will be anything but staid. It will be loud, it will be irreverent — two stage cues ideally suited for Matt Hitt.
