“For nineties model buffs, the sight of Tasha Tilberg on the runway at Prabal Gurung was a reason to be very cheerful this past week. Though she’s a seasoned shapeshifter when it comes to playing a fashion part—she was a convincing Paul McCartney in a 2001 music-themed Vogue shoot—it’s Tilberg’s personal style that has made a lasting impact, one which has given rise to a new generation of models and cool girls. Septum rings and tattoos might be trending now, but Tasha was there first—or at least a close second. “I think had my septum pierced when I was seventeen,” she says. “I certainly wasn’t the first; Stella Tennant beat me to that. I think people are a lot more accepting of that individual spark right now, but back then I definitely struggled. I always had this desire to represent my own sense of individuality.””
